“The child should live in nature and not merely visit it.” — Friedrich Froebel
"There's no such thing as the wrong weather. Just the wrong clothes"
Outdoor learning at Mucky Pups is where confidence grows, resilience strengthens and a lifelong love of nature begins.
Outdoor Learning at Mucky Pups...
Outdoor learning holds equal importance to indoor learning at Mucky Pups. It is not an add-on to our curriculum — it is an essential part of how children grow, explore and thrive.
Spending time outdoors has a powerful impact on children’s (and adults’) wellbeing and development. It supports a healthy lifestyle, builds physical strength and coordination, and offers a sense of freedom that indoor spaces simply cannot replicate. Through outdoor play, children develop harmonious relationships with others as they negotiate, take turns, cooperate and solve problems together.

We are proud to offer free-flow access to our outdoor environment throughout the day, allowing children to choose where they feel most inspired to learn. Children who learn best through movement and activity have daily opportunities to take on new challenges, manage manageable risks and build resilience in a supportive environment.
The natural world provides rich opportunities for imagination, creativity and resourcefulness. Children experience the changing weather and seasons first-hand, observe insects and wildlife, and develop a growing understanding of the world around them.
Our outdoor environment is carefully designed with unique features that support different types of learning, including:

Our outdoor environment is carefully designed with unique features that support different types of learning, including:
- A hard-core surface for bikes and scooters
- An artificial grass area for role play and safe exploration for our youngest children
- A woodland area where nature is abundant
- A den and sheltered spaces
- Growing beds for fruit, vegetables and herbs
- Water play and a mud kitchen
As an Eco-School, caring for our environment is part of our everyday learning. Children are involved in growing, planting, recycling and learning about sustainability in ways that are meaningful and hands-on.
Beyond our setting, we also make full use of our local community, with regular visits to local parks, walks and the city centre — helping children build confidence, awareness and a sense of belonging within their wider world.
At Mucky Pups, we believe children should have the opportunity to feel the rain, chase the wind, explore the mud and celebrate the sunshine — because childhood should be active, adventurous and connected to nature.

Learning Beyond Our Gates
At Mucky Pups, our outdoor learning does not stop at the garden gate. We believe children develop a strong sense of belonging and confidence when they understand the community around them. Regular trips and outings are an important part of our curriculum and help children build knowledge of their local environment.
We visit our local library, market, parks, the beach and the RSPB reserve, giving children real-life experiences that deepen their understanding of the world. These visits provide rich opportunities for language development, social interaction, physical challenge and curiosity. Children learn how to behave safely in the community, develop independence and build confidence in new environments.
By exploring our local community together, children build confidence, curiosity and a sense of belonging that stays with them long after they leave us.
