Supporting Emotional Wellbeing

At Mucky Pups Preschool, we believe emotional wellbeing is at the heart of children’s learning and development.
Young children are still learning to understand emotions, manage feelings and respond to challenges. Through warm relationships, consistent routines and gentle guidance, we help children develop confidence, resilience and self-regulation skills over time.
We recognise that children need support from caring adults before they are able to manage emotions independently. This is why strong relationships, co-regulation and emotional wellbeing are central to our daily practice.
Our calm and nurturing environment helps children feel safe, valued and ready to learn.

Behaviour and Emotional Development

At Mucky Pups Preschool, we understand that behaviour is a form of communication.
Young children are still learning how to manage frustration, excitement, disappointment and other big feelings. Sometimes these emotions may lead to behaviours such as shouting, hitting, biting, withdrawing or becoming overwhelmed.
Rather than simply focusing on the behaviour itself, practitioners work to understand the feelings and needs behind it.
Through calm responses, supportive relationships and consistent routines, we help children gradually learn how to: express feelings safely, build positive relationships, understand boundaries, solve problems, take turns, develop empathy and resilience.

We focus on connection before correction, helping children feel safe and supported as they learn.

Our Approach at Mucky Pups

Our approach to emotional wellbeing and behaviour support is built around kindness, respect and understanding.
Children are supported through: warm and trusting relationships, calm and predictable routines, our Golden Rules and Values, co-regulation with caring adults, modelling positive language and behaviour, emotional literacy activities, breathing, mindfulness and yoga, opportunities to talk about feelings, quiet spaces and calming areas, praise and encouragement

Our “Pause for Thought” Together Times help children develop mindfulness, emotional awareness and strategies to manage feelings in positive ways.

We also use The Colour Monster to help children recognise, name and understand different emotions in ways that are meaningful and age-appropriate.

Golden Rules and Values

Our Golden Rules help children understand how to stay safe, respectful and kind within our preschool community.
These are: Kind hands, Quiet voices, Good listening, Good manners, Walking feet

Alongside this, our monthly values help children develop empathy, confidence, resilience and respect for others.
Children are supported to understand not only what behaviour is expected, but why kindness, friendship and respect matter.

Calming Spaces and Emotional Support

Children have access to calming spaces and emotional tools throughout the setting to help them feel safe and supported when emotions become overwhelming.

These areas may include: cosy spaces, sensory resources, breathing prompts, visual supports, mindfulness activities, quiet reflection opportunities

Practitioners support children through co-regulation first, helping them feel calm and connected before talking through situations together.

Working Together With Families

We believe children benefit most when families and practitioners work together in supportive and consistent ways.
Daily communication, shared strategies and strong relationships help children feel secure both at home and at preschool.
We are always happy to talk with families about emotional wellbeing, confidence, friendships or behaviour and can work together to find supportive approaches that meet each child’s individual needs.

Supporting Self-Regulation at Home

Simple everyday experiences can help children develop emotional awareness and self-regulation skills.

These may include: talking openly about feelings, modelling calm behaviour, reading stories about emotions, practising breathing exercises, playing turn-taking games, allowing time for rest and quiet moments.

Children learn emotional skills gradually over time through patience, consistency and supportive relationships.

Every Child is Unique

Every child develops emotional skills differently and at their own pace.
At Mucky Pups Preschool, we view children with empathy, curiosity and understanding, recognising that all children need support, guidance and encouragement as they grow.
Our aim is to help children build the emotional foundations that support wellbeing, relationships and learning both now and in the future.
