Climate Action Plan...

“Every small action we take today helps create a healthier, more sustainable world for our children tomorrow.” — United Nations, SDGs

Our Climate Action Plan

At Mucky Pups Preschool, we are committed to caring for the planet while nurturing children. Our Climate Action Plan sets out how we reduce our environmental impact, educate children about sustainability, and embed eco-friendly practices across our setting.
We believe that looking after the environment is part of looking after children. We aim to create a setting where children learn to respect nature, reduce waste, and develop lifelong sustainable habits through everyday routines and play.

Our Vision

We believe that looking after the environment is part of looking after children. We aim to create a setting where children learn to respect nature, reduce waste, and develop lifelong sustainable habits through everyday routines and play.

“Teaching children to care for the planet is teaching them to care for life itself.” — United Nations, SDGs

Our Commitments

We are committed to the Department for Education’s goal to move early years settings towards net zero by 2050. This means reducing our carbon footprint, embedding sustainability in our curriculum, engaging parents, and working with the local community.

Our Four Key Pillars

Adaptation and Resilience
  • Preparing for and responding to extreme weather
  • Ensuring safe outdoor play, ventilation, heating, and drainage
  • Reviewing emergency procedures for severe weather events
Biodiversity and Nature
  • Daily outdoor learning and nature play
  • Planting and growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers
  • Creating wildlife-friendly spaces
  • Teaching children to respect all living things
Climate Education and Green Skills
  • Sustainability is part of everyday routines and play
  • Stories, songs, and discussions about caring for the planet
  • Children involved in recycling, gardening, and energy-saving
  • Developing teamwork, responsibility, and problem-solving
Decarbonisation and Net Zero
  • Reducing energy use and improving efficiency
  • Reducing waste and increasing recycling and reuse
  • Making sustainable purchasing choices
  • Encouraging walking, cycling, and other low-carbon travel
  • Working towards measuring and reducing our carbon footprint

Government Sustainability Aims

We are working towards national sustainability goals by:
  • Including UN Sustainable Development Goals in our curriculum
  • Spending time outdoors daily learning about weather, seasons, and growing
  • Teaching children how to monitor our carbon footprint
  • Engaging parents in sustainability learning
  • Working with local community projects and partners

This Year’s Priority Actions...

This year, our focus is on:
  • Completing a biodiversity assessment of our setting
  • Understanding and exploring sustainability funding
  • Completing a food and catering audit
  • Running a regular travel and active travel survey for families and staff
  • Collaborating with our landlord and local stakeholders on sustainability projects

Monitoring and Review

We reflect on progress termly and review this plan annually. Key questions include:
  • Are we making progress on priority actions?
  • Are children engaged and learning through sustainability activities?
  • Are parents effectively involved?
  • Are energy, waste, and travel practices improving?
  • Are there new opportunities or challenges with local stakeholders?
  • Are we capturing evidence in an organised way?
  • Are our curriculum and routines reflecting our sustainability goals?
  • What can we improve for the next term or year?
We believe small, consistent actions make a big difference, and we are excited to continue learning, improving, and sharing our journey with families and our community.

“We all have a responsibility to protect the Earth so every child can grow up in a safe and thriving world.” — United Nations, SDGs
